Discussion #5: Game of Thrones Reading Challenge 2012

Here is the fifth monthly meme/discussions for the Game of Thrones Reading Challenge. Yes I do realize this post is late, but it’s been a busy reading year :) . This month’s discussion is on A Dance with Dragons

As usual, I will post five questions for you all to mull over and I will answer one of the questions myself to start off the discussion. I also invite you to post your favorite quote or passage from the book. These are meant purely for fun and by no means required to participate in the challenges.

Make sure you link your responses or reviews back to your blog using the Mr Linky on the corresponding Game of Thrones Monthly Meme page or you can simply leave your response in the comments. The goal is to have some fun discussions and talk about the books.

I hope all you challenge participants have had some time to read third book in the series, but if not no worries we do have all year :) . Please remember, no matter where you are in the book or series, you are more than welcome to discuss the book right along with us :) .

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you think Stannis is the ‘Prince that was promised’? Why or why not? Who do you think it is if not Stannis?
  2. Who do you think Jon Snow’s mother is?
  3. If you were Dany would you marry Hizdahr or would you have picked  Quentyn Martell of Dorne instead and gone back to Westeros? Do you think her choice was foolish?
  4. How do you think Bran’s greenseeing and skinchanging abilities will play into the plot? How do you think these abilities will change his character?
  5. Do you feel sorry for Theon Greyjoy or do you think he got what he deserved? Is he a redeemable character to you? Why or why not?

The Lit Bitch’s Response

Question #1/#2: I think in some ways, questions 1 and 2 go hand in hand so I will kind of answer these two together. I do not think Stannis is the one who was promised. I am not really sure why Melisandre thought it was Stannis in the first place but for whatever reason she did and I think she’s wrong. First of all, in the book it was mentioned that the sword Lightbringer while it glows, isn’t actually hot which to me indicates there is something a miss here. Second, the prophecy says that Azor Ahai will be reborn amidst smoke and salt….while Stannis was named Lord of Dragonstone he wasn’t actually born there, so it seems to me that Stannis is a weak choice for the Prince that was promised. I have never really bought into Stannis for the prophecy…..the obvious choice would be Dany.

There is some debate about the chosen one having Targaryen blood to be Azor Ahai….may be required, may not. But either way, it seems like it would clearly be Dany. She’s a Targaryen, born on Dragonstone….not to mention she has dragons. Some speculate that Lightbringer isn’t actually a sword….it could be something else, in this case dragons. While that fits too, I still think Lightbringer is a sword personally. So for me, Dany doesn’t totally fit either.

So here’s my hypothesis…I think Jon Snow is the Prince that was promised and here’s why. I think the sword he carries (Longclaw) is actually Lightbringer. Yes it’s the Mormont sword etc but if I recall he says the blade is always hot. Plus he has a dream about fighting the Others using a red burning sword. There seems to be a lot of speculation in this book about using Longclaw in battle with the Others, Jon seems to wonder if it will work against Others the way dragon glass does. He thinks because it’s Valyrian Steel perhaps it will….I’m kind of wondering if it will light up when it comes in contact with the Others….we shall see. Then that kind of leads into the second question, if Targaryen blood is required then Jon seems like an unlikely candidate….but what if he was actually a Targaryen?

I personally have thought since the first book that Ned Stark having a bastard just didn’t fit right. I kind of wonder if Jon isn’t the child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen? Ned made reference to a secret he promised his sister back in Book I ….what if he promised to raise her child as his own? We are told that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna and raped her repeatedly but in this book Ser Barristan says she was the woman he loved….what is they had been married in secret? Perhaps in front of a weirwood? And since Bran is a greenseer and can see things past, maybe he will see the truth there? Who knows but that is my theory. Either way I don’t think Stannis is the chosen one….not by a long shot.
