5 Spooky Books I Love & Recommend for Halloween Reading

There is something about fall that always makes me want to reach for something a little darker and spookier to read. Give me haunted houses, vampires, ghosts, dark academia, occult happenings, and a good Gothic setting and I am a happy reader!
I have read and reviewed A LOT of books here on The Lit Bitch over the years, and naturally that includes plenty of spooky reads. While I am not necessarily a huge straight-up horror reader, I absolutely love books that are atmospheric, Gothic, mysterious, or have a supernatural element to them.
So rather than simply rounding up whatever spooky books happen to be popular right now, I wanted to go back through books I have actually read and loved and share five that I would personally recommend for your fall and Halloween reading list.

1. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
Honestly, I could probably make this entire list Simone St. James books and call it a day.
I have read a number of her books over the years and her spooky reads have consistently been top shelf for me. If you enjoy atmospheric mysteries with supernatural elements, she is one of the first authors I recommend.
But if I have to pick a favorite, it has to be The Sun Down Motel.
A creepy roadside motel, a decades-old disappearance, ghosts, and a mystery that connects the past with the present—this one has basically everything I want from a spooky read. It’s creepy and atmospheric without being the kind of horror that makes me regret reading it alone at night.
If you haven’t read anything by Simone St. James yet, this is the book I would start with. And if you enjoy it, she has plenty of other spooky books to keep you busy!
2. The Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris
Hear me out on this one!
The Sookie Stackhouse books are definitely the least scary recommendation on this list, but I couldn’t put together a Halloween reading list without including them.
These books are just FUN.
Vampires, supernatural creatures, murder, mystery, romance, and plenty of drama—what more could you want for a lighter Halloween read? I have always loved this series, and it’s a great choice when you want all the supernatural vibes without necessarily wanting something dark or frightening.
Plus, there are plenty of books in the series, so if you find yourself hooked, you’ve got quite the reading binge ahead of you.
Start with Dead Until Dark and settle in for all the vampires, romance, murder, and supernatural drama!
3. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Mexican Gothic was SO good and easily earned a place on this list.
This book has so many of the classic Gothic elements that I love—a mysterious house, family secrets, an unsettling atmosphere, and that constant feeling that something is very, very wrong.
But what really made this one stand out for me was the way Silvia Moreno-Garcia brought Mexican history and culture into a story that still had that wonderfully old-fashioned, almost Victorian Gothic feeling.
It’s strange, dark, creepy, and incredibly atmospheric. This is exactly the kind of spooky book I gravitate toward because the setting and overall sense of unease do so much of the work.
If you like your spooky reads more Gothic than outright horror, this is absolutely one to add to your fall reading stack.
4. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Dark academia meets the occult.
That’s basically all you need to tell me.
Ninth House is DARK, which is exactly why it works so well as a Halloween read. Secret societies, ghosts, magic, occult rituals, murder, and an Ivy League setting give this series such a sinister atmosphere.
I loved the first two books in this series, Ninth House and Hell Bent, and now we have a third book, Dead Beat, making this officially the Ninth House Trilogy! If you are coming to these books after reading Leigh Bardugo’s YA novels, just know that this is very much adult fantasy and ventures into considerably darker territory.
If you like complicated characters, secret societies, dark academia, and the idea that all sorts of sinister things might be happening behind closed doors at an elite university, this is such a fun series to pick up during spooky season.
Start with Ninth House, move on to Hell Bent, and then you’ll have Dead Beat to round out the trilogy.
5. The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
Last but certainly not least is another Gothic favorite, The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas.
This book combines so many things I love in a spooky read: an eerie old house, supernatural happenings, occult elements, history, and culture. It has that wonderful Gothic feeling where you know there is something very wrong with the house long before you completely understand what is happening.
Isabel Cañas is also one of those authors who has become an automatic read for me. I love the way she combines historical settings and cultural elements with darker supernatural stories, and The Hacienda is such a great example of that.
If Mexican Gothic sounds like your kind of book, I would absolutely put The Hacienda on your list as well. They are different stories, but I think readers who enjoy that combination of history, culture, atmosphere, and Gothic horror will find a lot to love here.

These aren’t necessarily the five books that are going to scare you the most, and honestly, that’s exactly why they’re my picks.
When it comes to spooky reading, I tend to gravitate toward atmosphere, mysteries, Gothic settings, supernatural elements, a little romance here and there, and characters I actually care about.
