Discussion #3: Game of Thrones Reading Challenge 2012

Here is the third monthly meme/discussions for the Game of Thrones Reading Challenge. This month’s discussion is on A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire Book #3).

As usual, I will post five questions for you all to mull over and I will answer one of the questions myself to start off the discussion. I also invite you to post your favorite quote or passage from the book. These are meant purely for fun and by no means required to participate in the challenges.

Make sure you link your responses or reviews back to your blog using the Mr Linky on the corresponding Game of Thrones Monthly Meme page or you can simply leave your response in the comments. The goal is to have some fun discussions and talk about the books.

I hope all you challenge participants have had some time to read third book in the series, but if not no worries we do have all year :). Please remember, no matter where you are in the book or series, you are more than welcome to discuss the book right along with us :).

The Lit Bitch’s Response

Question #4: I was so excited when Ser Jorah finally made his feelings for Daenerys known! I have grown to like Ser Jorah over the last few books and feel surprisingly bad for him and his luck in love!

Even though he is older than Daenerys and a little smarmy I think he really does love her and respect her in-spite of his initial intentions that he had to spy on her….I think he has genuinely fallen for her. On one hand, it sounds like Ser Jorah falls in love a little too easy and seems like kind of desperate (considering he bankrupted himself trying to make his first wife happy) but on the other hand, he seems like the kind of guy who would be loyal to the one he loves no matter what, I would even venture to guess that he still loves his ex-wife no matter if she left him a broken man….he seems honorable like that, underneath it all.

I think one of the reasons that he is so drawn to Daenerys is her strength. People who are charismatic, strong, and passionate like Daenerys are never short on admirers. When Ser Jorah meets Daenerys, he is quite literally at rock bottom….he is exiled and disowned from his family, though a knight none the less. He has nothing. He feeds on her strength, courage, and fire….through her he finds redemption and a reason to love again.

I was actually surprised that Daenerys turned him down! I think she loves him and doesn’t know it yet. I think she respects him and trusts him and even though he has hurt her, I think they will end up together when the time comes. I think that Daenerys needs him desperately though she doesn’t fully know it yet.

Daenerys needs his wisdom and guidance just like he needs her courage and strength. She obviously struggles with the feelings about Ser Jorah after their kiss…she doesn’t want him in that way, but yet deep down somewhere it sounds like there is a piece of her heart stirring and curious to know what love might be like with him. It will be interesting to see how their relationship plays out in the remaining books.
