Review: Quickies by Ollie Levy (Short Story Collection)

In this collection we meet a wide variety of people from all walks of life….some are married, single, engaged…..some have high flyer careers, and some are average Joe’s, but they all have one thing in common….they all love a good quickie.

Why fuss with a marathon love making session when a quickie will get the job done? That’s the question that Ollie Levy explores in her series of short stories appropriately titled Quickies.

What I loved about this collection was each randevú was short and sweet. There wasn’t a lot of back story and the characters literally got right down to business. It made for a fast and steamy read. It wasn’t overly graphic and the sex scenes were all tastefully done.

Sex scenes are always difficult to write….too much one way and they are raunchy, too much the other way and they are cheesy…Levy got it right in this story collection. They were all written with a practiced hand that shows erotica at it’s finest.

How we all know that not every quickie hook up ends in satisfaction….I loved that Levy explored the other side of quickies with perfect ironic humor. Chapter two was all about the quickie gone awry….and let me just say, after a couple of those stories I was rolling with laughter. Talk about the awkward moment when!

Levy was a writer for Sex in the City so she has a wonderful way of writing ironic, edgy humor and that really showed throughout the short stories.

I felt like all the stories could easily happen to ‘normal people’, which made me connect better to the characters in the stories. I liked that it wasn’t all glitz and glamour….these sounded like real people that I would know and real scenarios not some fabricated love fest. They seemed like they could happen to anyone, anytime, any place. I loved that angle!

My only issue was I wished it was longer. At fifty five pages, I thought it was a little too shot. I found the stories and some of the quotes and facts about quickies so engaging that I was sad when it ended. I also didn’t care for the cover. There was too much going on for me….too many colors and too many pictures. I personally would have gone for a more simple cover to match the simplicity of the ‘quickie’.

This is an edgy, fun, humorous read with lots of tastefully done erotica. If you don’t have a real life quickie waiting in the wings, then grab this book and live vicariously through other peoples quickies! You won’t be sorry!

I wonder if Levy intentionally kept the book at 55 pages to serve as a “literary quickie”? Haha.
