Review: The First to Lie by Hank Phillippi Ryan

I only just discovered Hank P Ryan last year when I read, The Murder List. I absolutely loved The Murder List and couldn’t wait to read more by this incredible author!

Not only is she a wonderful writer but she is also a sweet, thoughtful, and kind person! I have loved getting to know her over this year and I was even more excited to read this book when it came up for review.

I had to restrain myself when this book arrived. I was so tempted to toss aside whatever I was reading at that time and start this one instead but I held off until it was closer to the time to post my review.

Summary

Bestselling and award-winning author and investigative reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan delivers another twisty, thrilling cat and mouse novel of suspense that will have you guessing, and second-guessing, and then gasping with surprise.

We all have our reasons for being who we are—but what if being someone else could get you what you want?

After a devastating betrayal, a young woman sets off on an obsessive path to justice, no matter what dark family secrets are revealed. What she doesn’t know—she isn’t the only one plotting her revenge.

An affluent daughter of privilege. A glamorous manipulative wannabe. A determined reporter, in too deep. A grieving widow who must choose her new reality. Who will be the first to lie? And when the stakes are life and death, do a few lies really matter? (summary from Goodreads)

Review

This book had a lot to love. It’s a mystery thriller that has a lot of complexity to it and I loved Ryan’s love of investigative reporting comes through in this book. It really gave authenticity to the story and characters. I loved how skillfully she wove this into the story and made it interesting and feel new yet relatable and familiar. I have been reading so many domestic suspense novels lately that it was so refreshing to have something that was taking a harder look at corporate America and the health care field.

While I really enjoyed the story with its twists and turns, there was one thing that took me a minute to overcome and become orientated with and that was the amount of POVs. I don’t mind a lot of POVs but sometimes it can take me a little bit to get into the story when there are more than two. So that said, it took me a little bit to get going with this one but once I figured out what was going on, I was completely hooked.

There was so much to enjoy in this one and so much I didn’t see coming. After a few chapters I couldn’t put it down and was wholly invested in the characters and the outcome. The complexity of the different POVs and the culmination of those narratives certainly hits a high note and I thoroughly enjoyed the last 30% of this book and devoured it in only one sitting!

If you are wanting to take a break from the ever popular domestic suspense genre and try something equally as thrilling with investigative interests as well as twists that I never saw coming then you will definitely want to pick this one up! Ryan is a quality writer and each of her books have been a treat to read and discover. I can’t wait to read more by her in the future, add this one to your TBR, you won’t be sorry!
