Giveaway: THE SECRET CHORD by Geraldine Brooks

Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage. Brooks’ primary narrator is David’s counselor and friend the prophet Natan who sets down the best and worst of David: the light and the dark, the betrayals, deaths, kindness, baseness, and soaring above all, the unparalleled music that he created.

THE SECRET CHORD provides new context for some of the best-known episodes of David’s life while also focusing on others, even more remarkable and emotionally intense, which have been neglected.  We see David through the eyes of those who love him or fear him—from the prophet Natan, voice of his conscience, to his mother, Nizevet, his wives Mikal, Avigail, and Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the late-born son who redeems his Lear-like old age and who will eventually be crowned King himself—but not without fratricide and treason.

Thanks to the publisher, this week’s bitchin’ giveaway is for a copy of THE SECRET CHORD by Geraldine Brooks for your enjoyment!

Please welcome Eliza Redgold, author of NAKED: A NOVEL OF LADY GODIVA, to The Lit Bitch with a special guest post about dancing with horses! Don’t miss a chance to be entered in the giveaway listed at the bottom of this post!

We know her name. We know of her naked ride. We don’t know her true story.

We all know the legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long, flowing hair. So the story goes, she begged her husband Lord Leofric of Mercia to lift a high tax on her people, who would starve if forced to pay. Lord Leofric demanded a forfeit: that Godiva ride naked on horseback through the town. There are various endings to Godiva’s ride, that all the people of Coventry closed their doors and refused to look upon their liege lady (except for ‘peeping Tom’) and that her husband, in remorse, lifted the tax.

Naked is an original version of Godiva’s tale with a twist that may be closer to the truth: by the end of his life Leofric had fallen deeply in love with Lady Godiva. A tale of legendary courage and extraordinary passion, Naked brings an epic story new voice.
