Here we are, the last review for the last book in this horribly addicting series. As I mentioned in my review of The Cruel Prince, this was a series that I was sure that I wouldn’t like so thus I avoided it like the plague.
But I couldn’t deny the hype for the final installment of the series, The Queen of Nothing. My IG feed was saturated with pics of this book and people re-reading the series again in preparation so I found it extra hard to resist reading the first book.
After a couple of chapters of book one, I knew I was a hooked and ordered the remaining books immediately and read the entire series in like 4 days and then suffered a horrible book hangover where I feared I would never find anything as exciting as this series in the future. It was just that good!
Summary
After being pronounced Queen of Faerie and then abruptly exiled by the Wicked King Cardan, Jude finds herself unmoored, the queen of nothing. She spends her time with Vivi and Oak, watches her fair share of reality television, and does the odd job or two, including trying to convince a cannibalistic faerie from hunting her own in the mortal world.
When her twin sister Taryn shows up asking of a favor, Jude jumps at the chance to return to the Faerie world, even if it means facing Cardan, who she loves despite his betrayal.
When a dark curse is unveiled, Jude must become the first mortal Queen of Faerie and uncover how to break the curse, or risk upsetting the balance of the whole Faerie world (summary from Goodreads).
Review
One of the things that I felt like really set this series apart was Carden. Throughout the series, he’s just this kind of drunk loser who no one wanted on the throne. He had zero ambition and he never could fight the way so many of his siblings could. He was so far beneath Jude in court politics, scheming, and fighting that it was pathetic. He was more than happy to defer to Jude on everything except for wine. I thought this really gave Jude room to shine in the series and shine she did. She was this exciting character who could take care of herself and rose higher than anyone ever thought possible for her.
In this book though we see that Jude is exiled and Carden starts to come into his own and shine in his own way which I loved. The first two books were really about Jude but here we see what kind of ruler Carden is going to be and what kind of man he has become in Jude’s shadow. I loved how this book explored that and brought both Jude and Carden up together to meet in the middle and become true partners. It was a wonderful story that unfolded and I couldn’t get enough of it.
I love all the intrigue and deception in this series too. It always kept me guessing and eager to see who was scheming what next. I said it before and I will say it again, Madoc needs his own spin off series because I need to know more details about his first wife (Jude’s mom) and what happened there. I was intrigued by the idea of Madoc in love considering he was so ruthless. As much as I hated him, I couldn’t help but love him at the same time. He was a worthy villain in this series.
If you have a YA lover on your Christmas list this year, you need to get them this series. It was complex and fantastic and one of the best series I’ve read in a long time!
