As many of you know, I have been a long time fan of Gail Carriger. She is a consistently accomplished writer with unique and interesting books that I always seem to find myself burning the midnight oil to read.

I am not a huge sci-fi fan. I don’t read a lot of it nor do I watch any sci fi. I mean I liked the idea of it, but it’s just not my genre at all. So when Carriger asked if I wanted to review this one…..I hesitated.

But I did agree to read it based on the fact that she has always seemed to win me over no matter what genre or theme she is writing about. But I was admittedly skeptical….I mean aliens? Space? Review: The Favorite Daughter by Patti Callahan Henry

I recently read Becoming Mrs Lewis by Patti Callahan (Henry) and I fell in love with that book and was eager to read some of her more contemporary books.

I had been pitched her book, The Bookshop at Water’s End, back in 2017 and passed at the time and now I am so sad that I did because I would have discovered this author long before now!

At any rate, I was thrilled to read this book when it came out and was looking forward to reading some of her contemporary fiction to see how it compared to her historical work. I knew that each book would be vastly different as they are different genres, but she’s an excellent writer and I know that good writing is good writing, and regardless of genre, that’s what stands out in a good book. Review: Montauk by Nicola Harrison

This book was on my radar ages ago! As I have mentioned a bunch of times before, I love debut novels and discovering new up and coming authors. This book stood out for me, not just because it was a debut, but also because it had a unique title.

I put this one on my calendar and was excited as the date to start reading it got closer and closer. I also loved the new over design. The original cover art really said ‘chick lit’ or ‘women’s fiction’ to me, but with this new redesign it says more historical fiction.

I love the simple grays of the background and then the stand out teal dress on the woman. It really was a beautiful cover redesign and much more visually eye catching than the original. The Seven Sisters series has been a long time favorite of mine, yet somehow I managed to miss the third book!

I started off reading the first two books from the publisher and then a long time seemed to pass on then The Pearl Sister showed up for review and I assumed it was the next book, as I always seem to forget about Star in the family anyway!

But as soon as I started The Pearl Sister I realized that I had missed this book somehow, but by then I was too engrossed in CeCe’s story to put it down so I just skipped The Shadow Sister all together.

Now that I am doing a re-read of this whole series, I figured it was high time that I read this one so I downloaded it on Audible and listened to it while running errands with my son, which took a few weeks but I found that this book was a diamond in the ruff! I am always on the look out for new historical mysteries that I might like, especially ones with sassy heroines. I have my usual go to authors but often I find myself waiting on books from numerous favorite authors and I am itching to fill the gaps and find the next ‘it mystery series’.

That’s what happened with this one. I already read the latest historic mysteries from my usual go to authors and found myself wondering—what now? This book appeared on my desk for review literally at just the right moment.
