Review: In the Garden of Spite by Camilla Bruce

A story about a female serial killer? Say no more. This book was on my radar for weeks and I couldn’t wait to start reading it. It sounded deliciously dark and creepy with so much promise. My book club picked this one to read for our February book because it sounded so amazing.

I was fully ready for this book to be on the darker side. In fact I expected it to be one of my more darker reads with a lot of nuance and atmosphere. On the surface this book was primed to be one of my favorite reads of 2021 and I couldn’t wait to start reading this one. And then I did start reading it and I don’t know that I was fully prepared for how dark this novel was going to get.

Full disclosure, I didn’t finish this one. I simply couldn’t. It wasn’t for me and it also wasn’t for any of the ladies in my book club (we switched to another book for February) but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t read this one. I think this is a book that would appeal to a certain type of reader rather than the masses.

Whether you are gearing up for a romantic date night with your significant other or if you prefer to celebrate galentines or brotines instead, I have a list of some wonderful romances in honor of Valentines Day!

I never met a romance I didn’t like and with the release of Bridgerton on Netflix, I think more and more people are embracing romance novels and HEA like never before. I know thatI have been reading all the romances I can get my hands on lately. I love romance and I love watching my favorite heroines get their HEA.

What to Read After Bridgerton

If you have been following me on Instagram, then you will know that I have been binge reading the Bridgerton books. I watched the show in one sitting and was instantly obsessed with not only the Netflix series, but I knew that I needed to read the book. I subsequently devoured all eight books in less than a month. Actually I read The Duke and I back in the spring of 2020, but the other seven books were all ready in less than three weeks, that’s how much I loved them.

Now here I am with a massive book hangover. I picked up another book to read and instantly felt sad—it didn’t compare to the Bridgerton’s and I knew that the only thing to cure my book hangover was to find more books like Bridgerton and devour them too. I know there are other out there who are feeling like me and need something to cure their Bridgeton hangover!

I decided to put together a short list of books to read if you are suffering from Bridgerton withdrawals. These five books are all ones that I have read and enjoyed over the years and I think that others will enjoy too. But let me say this…..if you have watched the show and haven’t read the books—-stop reading this and go read the Bridgerton books first.

Review: The Heiress Gets a Duke (The Gilded Age Heiresses #1) by Harper St. George

Let’s start off by acknowledging the fact that this cover is simply stunning. When second I laid eyes on this cover, I knew I needed to read it. It’s gorgeous and it promises to capture the feeling of opulence in the Gilded Age. This was an easy yes to review!

I have never read anything by Harper St George before but she has written a number of romances so I was eager to see how she compared to some of the other historical romances I have been reading lately. I instantly fell in love with this one and the characters not to mention to luxurious setting!

I could easily have read this book in one sitting and in fact I almost did but then I had work the following day so I sadly had to put a bookmark in with only 10% left of the book. It was a quick romantic escape full of romance, heat, and chemistry. I loved it and am so glad that this book is the first of her new series. I am really looking forward to Violet’s story next!

Review: The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

Converted sanatorium urned into five star hotel—-stop right there while I clear my reading calendar! I was completely sold on this intense and atmospheric debut from the opening description. Then it was picked as a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick and that right there was enough to get me even more excited about this novel!

It has been getting a ton of advanced praise and so much buzz on social media but when I started reading it, it was easy to see that all the buzz was absolutely worth it! I loved the atmosphere of this book and it was exactly what I was hoping that it would be, something dark, twisty, and chilling.

I normally don’t like minimalist or super cold Norwegian/Scandinavian type thrillers but this novel has so much to recommend itself and it’s not to be missed. I also included some videos about the resort and the author talking about the book as well so keep reading to check both of those out and if you are looking for your next thriller, this is it!
