Discussion #2: Game of Thrones Reading Challenge 2012

Here is the second monthly meme/discussions for the Game of Thrones Reading Challenge. This month’s discussion is on A Song of Ice and Fire #2, A Clash of Kings.

As usual, I will post five questions for you all to mull over and I will answer one of the questions myself to start off the discussion. I also invite you to post your favorite quote or passage from the book. These are meant purely for fun and by no means required to participate in the challenges.

Make sure you link your responses or reviews back to your blog using the Mr Linky on the corresponding Game of Thrones Monthly Meme page or you can simply leave your response in the comments. The goal is to have some fun discussions and talk about the books.

I hope all you challenge participants have had some time to read the first two books in the series, but if not no worries we do have all year :) . Please remember, no matter where you are in the book or series, you are more than welcome to discuss the book right along with us :). Review: A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2) by George R.R. Martin

War is coming.

All over the Seven Kingdoms, chaos  reigns! With King Robert dead and the Lannister family on the brink of scandal…the fate of the Iron Throne is in question–four different self professed ‘kings’ proclaim their imperial rule over the Seven Kingdoms threatening to divide the realm. Brother against brother–house against house–alliances made and broken–war changes everything.

A Clash of Kings is the second in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. I think this is the longest and most complex books I have ever read (1,009 pages). Though it is long, the story itself is rich and the prose lyrical–this series definitely reads like a hero’s ballad adventure.

As I mentioned in my review of the first book Game of Thrones, the series itself is intricate and tedious. Once you get into the story as I did with this book and figure out how to read high fantasy such as this…the reader can fully appreciate the story, characters, prose, and plot.  This series is a beautifully written adventure and I can wholeheartedly say I liked this book much better than the first because I could appreciate the story more once I knew how to navigate the genre. Discussion #1: Game of Thrones Reading Challenge 2012

As promised, I will be posting monthly meme’s/discussions for both reading challenges I am hosting, Outlander and Game of Thrones. These are meant purely for fun and by no means required to participate in the challenges. I will post five questions for you all to mull over and I will answer one of the questions myself to start off the discussion. I also invite you to post your favorite quote or passage from the book as well.

You are welcome to link your responses or reviews back to your blog using the Mr Linky on the corresponding Discussion pages (in this case the Game of Thrones Monthly Meme/Discussion page) or you can simply leave your response in the comments. The goal is to have some fun discussions and talk about the books.

Challenge participants hopefully have had some time to read the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, Game of Thrones. but if not no worries we do have all year :) . Review: A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. Martin

Winter is coming.

The Stark family motto rings in the ears of all the people of Winterfell….but it is ringing loudest in the ears Lord Stark himself…..winter is coming.

A Game of Thrones is the first in George R. R. Martin’s epic high fantasy series , A Song of Ice and Fire. Let me just say, epic doesn’t begin to describe this series…..each book is roughly 800+ pages.

The story itself is intricate and tedious….you really need to pay attention to what is going on but once you get use to the prose, flow, and points of view….you are rewarded with a richly designed and beautifully written story.

Personally, I found the different ‘houses’ and genealogy hard to keep straight and I was extremely grateful for the last 25+ pages of the book which are devoted to the house genealogies, colors, sigil, and mottos….and thankfully a map of Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms which also helped my picture things more clearly in my mind….and yes I did reference both of these things often so I could keep up with all that was going on. I also highly recommend browsing the Ice and Fire Wiki page…it was extremely helpful to have a guide!! Continue reading “Review: A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. Martin”

2012 Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire Series) Reading Challenge, Sign up now!

Winter is coming.

Well I guess technically winter is already here in Oregon’s as is it almost everywhere else in the Northern hemisphere….LOL :).

As many of you know I am hosting the Outlander series reading challenge again this year…..and I know I said I was a little over epic book series, but I am totally going to make an exception for this series! I have heard such great things about the Game of Thrones (a Song of Ice and Fire series) and I have had the first 2 books on my shelf at home begging me to read them.

The time has come, I can no longer ignore the books….I must read them!! I am dying to watch the HBO Game of Thrones series as I hear it rivals even that of the books but sadly I have to wait till it comes out on DVD which will probably be sometime in March…which is just enough time for me to read the Song of Ice and Fire series and what better excuse than a reading challenge.

I am hosting a very informal reading challenge for the Song of Ice and Fire series here on my blog this year for those of you who are in want of motivation to read this series. The rules are simple, read the Song of Ice and Fire series…post comments, blog about it, review the series….totally up to you!

You must sign up for the series here via Mr Linky and please also spread the love by grabbing the button and posting to your blog.

Grab the button by copy/pasting the code below to your blog or by locating the Song of Ice and Fire Series Reading Challenge button on the main page: Continue reading “2012 Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire Series) Reading Challenge, Sign up now!”
