Review: Equal of the Sun by Anita Amirrezvani

If you have spent any time in the historical fiction section of your local library or bookstore you will find that most of the genre is dominated by Tudor era and WWII era fiction mostly set in England.

Let’s face it, those are the post popular periods and settings for HF. So if you are like me, you probably get really excited when you spot something of a new setting and era!

That’s exactly what happened when I discovered Equal of the Sun! Since I don’t know much about near/middle eastern history I was really excited to read this book! What a refreshing read!

Princess Pari is an Iranian princess living the lifestyle of wealth and privileged in the court of 1576.

Interview: The Maggie Hope Mystery Series by Susan Elia MacNeal

If you haven’t discovered the Maggie Hope Mystery series yet, you need to! If you are a fan of Jacqueline Winspear or Laurie R. King then you will LOVE Maggie Hope.

This series has gotten a lot of attention since the second book, Princess Elizabeth’s Spy, was a New York Times bestseller and chosen by Oprah.com as “Mystery of the Week” and one of “7 Compulsively Readable Mysteries (for the Crazy-Smart Reader).”

Set in London during the Blitz of WWII, Maggie takes a job for the PM, Winston Churchill, that will change her life. She is a math wiz who is able to crack Nazi codes for the British government which leads to an opportunity of a life time, a potential position with British Intelligence as a spook…follow her journey and adventures where she goes from secretary to a full fledged spy!

I discovered this series last year when I won a copy of the first Maggie Hope Mystery, Mr Churchill’s Secretary. After reading it, I knew it would be a series that I would continue following. Maggie made me want dye my hair flaming read and don red lipstick, I love her character! I was thrilled when the author, Susan Elia MacNeal, agreed to do an interview with me as well. Her latest book, His Majesty’s Hope (Maggie Hope #3) is out currently, and you don’t want to miss this one!

Without further ado please welcome Susan Elia MacNeal to The Lit Bitch!

Guest Post: Cascade by Maryanne O’Hara

In addition to reviewing this outstanding novel, the author also agreed to stop by for a guest post about the research she did for Cascade. Without further ado please welcome Maryanne O’Hara to The Lit Bitch!

3 things I learned about the 1930s as I researched Cascade

1: Like many people who did not actually live through the Great Depression, I had a whole bunch of stereotypical images in my mind: that everyone tucked cardboard into their shoes, then stood on streetcorners trying to sell pencils and apples. Of course, some areas of the country were hit harder than others, but my book is set in Massachusetts and New York City. When I interviewed people who lived in those places during the time period, I often heard, “Oh yes, things were bad. Although….not so bad for my family. My father always had a job.” I came to realize that it is uncertainty that makes hard times hard for everyone. My characters are not “down and out.” They are average people struggling to make it through the hard times of the era.
