This was on my ‘top most anticipated book releases of the year’ list! As most of you know by now, I am a HUGE True Blood fan and I LOVE the Southern Vampire Mystery Series (SVMS) by Charalaine Harris. Saying that I couldn’t WAIT to get my hands on this book was the understatement of the year!
By lucky accident I have been sick for two days now so I have been able to be home for two days and devoured Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris.
The last book (Dead in the Family), the last book was a huge disappointment to me. Nothing really happened and the story just wasn’t really doing much for me…it seemed forced and thrown together…like I said, I was disappointed but still a devoted fan, I was hoping this book would be better than the last.
I was glad, this book was much better than the previous one, but not a complete resurrection. At this point in the series, I am getting kind of ready for things to unfold and move forward.
I was sad to hear that Harris said Sookie hasn’t met her ‘happily ever after’ (HEA) yet….so obviously her HEA isn’t going to be Eric, Bill, Alcide, Quinn, or Sam. So who does that leave?!?! There’s no one and I hear she only has two more books to go….so where the hell is the HEA? The last three books seem to not be moving forward but just….at a stand still romantically.
I’m over the whole ‘Eric…should I or shouldn’t I’ and I’m over the whole Bill thing ‘he loves me he loves me not’ and I’m over the Sam friendship/sexual desire/love trifecta! I will admit, the entire series has more or less been about Eric and Sookie in some way and honestly if she doesn’t end up with Eric I’m going to be SO disappointed! So much energy and time has been spent building up their relationship and it would be such a let down if they didn’t end up together.
My own personal prediction, I think the fairy love charm thing we discover in this book Sookie uses to make Eric human and they live HEA and have babies (since according to Harris, vampires can’t reproduce in her world etc.).
Im also kind of over Sookie at this point…I feel like she’s SO wrapped up in herself that she just should stop dating already! Or move on! I feel like she spends an inordinate amount of time trying to decide if she’s a ‘good person’ or ‘worthy’ of some things….she worried about everyone else and she’s worried that she’s this horrible person because she killed Debbie Pelt (and others, self defense or otherwise) and I she always questions if she should trust Eric or anyone really. She’s worried about the blood bond with Eric. She’s always complaining about the telepathy thing and trying to figure out the whole ‘fairy identity’ is just….??? I just feel like she should accept herself already and accept Eric for what he is…..though there are times in this book at least where I think we start to really see Eric for what he is and question his identity also.
In the book, this is the first time in the series that I really tried to imagine Eric as NOT vampire….could we as an audience ever see him as anything but what he is? I really started to think this when Sookie mentioned that she wished he was a ‘normal’ vampire and he was like….ummm I’m not going to be a boring guy…..EVER.
He’s very much into vampire politics which we knew from other books and he clearly is old fashion and likes keeping his business private….he doesn’t share his life with Sookie, he doesn’t let her in and in some ways I don’t think he ever can but we can always hope. I wasn’t really shocked to learn that Eric ‘had someone else’ in this book….not that he has someone else that he’s in love with, he clearly loves Sookie but he was ‘promised’ to the vampire queen of Oklahoma….I figured it was something like that. Surprisingly I was not upset by this but when we realized Bill was with Lorena somehow that was unforgivable…I guess since this ‘other woman’ isn’t Eric’s choice and Lorena was Bill’s I guess somehow it makes it ok. Oh and did I mention I am also kind of done with the vampire politics already??? We get it, they are power hungry.
I haven’t been able to STAND Bill since the third book…there were times when I was like….hummm ok MAYBE I could forgive him but still after 11 books I just can’t get over it. I don’t really care for Sam either, I don’t know why I just don’t think he’s right for Sookie either. Honestly if I had to make a HEA choice for Sookie I would tell her… take 10 years get your shit right, date, have fun, grieve over the loss of your loved ones, find/accept yourself, get the hell out of Bon Temps for a while, and then find Eric and live HEA :). But what’s a good love story without some turmoil and drama?
Sookie and Eric’s relationship is epic I think. And it was hard for me to read this last book knowing that this is kind of the beginning of the end of their relationship….well I guess the beginning of the end started in the last book but it was more clear in this book….in book ten there was still hope but I think in this book, Harris made it clear that there was no hope really. So I did have a hard time reading this one….it was sad knowing that.
At any rate as I said before this book was better than the last and a lot of things loose ends are being tied up.
But was this book worth all the hype???
Yes and no.
Like I said since book eight or nine I have been getting a little lukewarm to the series…not for lack of vampire soap opera drama–of that there is PLENTY to sink your teeth into–but I’ve been a little ‘meah’ since I would say book nine….I felt like after that we have just been waiting…..waiting for answers…..waiting for HEA….waiting for Eric and Sookie to make up their minds. I’m ready for things to happen and though we made some progress in this book, not much REALLY happened but of course that didn’t stop me from devouring it! I think Harris did deliver in this book….and of course this book is essential in the series. It will be very interesting to see what the next book will hold and what direction things will go with all the characters….lots of the lingering questions have been cleared up so I think all that’s left is to figure out who Sookie’s HEA will be and building that up.
Yes the series is amazing and I would give this installment of the series a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was good but not GREAT…..for me GREAT was book 4 (Dead to the World). Even though there are some things I’m kind of done with in the series….overall it is still fantastic!
