Review: The Canterbury Sisters by Kim Wright

Che’s life is literally hitting rock bottom. Her mom just died and her long time boyfriend just dumped her via letter for another woman. Right now her life absolutely, positively, sucks.

On the same day that she receives the break up letter, she also receives her mother’s ashes with a last request from her mom….take her ashes to Canterbury.

Che had forgotten that she promised to take her mother to Canterbury, it was a trip they both planned to take together but never did. So now her mother’s last wish is that they take that trip together.

Right now seems like as good of a time as any since se can’t stand the thought of facing her now ex when he comes to clean out their apartment so she boards the first flight to England. Instead of taking a train directly to Canterbury from London, Che’s mom wanted them to do a pilgrimage and follow the Canterbury trail which is a 60 mile walk from London.

Review: The Last Bookaneer by Matthew Pearl

Matthew Pearl has been on my radar for a while now. His books always look so intriguing since they are historic thrillers books…..about books…..but for some reason I just haven’t made it around to reading any of his books.

When this one came around to review I jumped at it since this was an author I have wanted to read.

The Last Bookaneer explores the dark side of publishing and the literary pirates who commandeered unpublished works by famous authors. Before 1890, loose copyright laws allowed for author’s works to be publish on the blackmarket so to speak, which ultimately gave rise to the bookaneers whose job it was to track down these unpublished gems at any cost.

With the new international copyright laws going into effect, the great bookaneer, Pen Davenport, embarks on one last adventure to recover an unpublished work by Robert Louis Stevenson on the exotic island of Samoa. But he needs help, Pen knows he can’t obtain the book alone so he enlists the help of his long time associate, Fergins.

Fergins is the narrator of the story and has enjoyed a nice, quiet life selling books…..and occasionally assisting Pen but he has never experienced anything like this. Before he knows it, he is whisked off onto a boat bound for the South Pacific with Pen to steal a manuscript worth thousands.

Review: The Patriot Threat (Cotton Malone #10) by Steve Berry

I’ve read a couple of the books in the Cotton Malone series and really really enjoyed them. Steve Berry has a special talent for merging politics, history, and conspiracy all together so well.

This time, our favorite ‘retired’ agent is recruited by his former boss to find a North Korean who has some top secret Treasury files.

Basically his novel begs the question “what if federal taxes were actually illegal”.

This case is anything but straight forward for Cotton and he finds himself globe trotting, trying to chase down leads and to recover the documents, not to mention wading through convoluted history.

The reader is treated to an array of historic facts (and some speculations), exotic locations, a new love interest for Cotton, and enough red herrings that keep the reader guessing until the end.
