Review: Hex by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight

When this book first popped up on my radar I was screaming inside YES! I was drawn in by the cover and description and when I started reading it, I felt like it was going to be a solid and different writing style.

I love science and botany and this book promised that as well as some dark academia which I thought sounded like a unique mix so obviously I went into this book with some pretty high expectations.

While I don’t know that I loved this one, I did enjoy some aspects and would gladly read something else by the author in the future and let me tell you why. Continue reading “Review: Hex by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight”

Review: The Library of Legends by Janie Chang

This book was on my radar well before it was a Book of the Month pick for April. In fact I have been looking forward to reading this book for months! This cover is absolutely stunning and this book sounded like a new and exciting piece of a little known time in history.

I haven’t read a lot of Asian historical fiction beyond some of the more well known titles like Memoirs of Geisha and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Memoirs of a Geisha was one of my favorite reads when I read it years ago and for a while I bought a ton of historical fiction set in Asia after I read that book but just never got around to reading many of those books.

European historical fiction is inundated with novels all of which are always trying to distinguish themselves as something new, but often they are all very similar which is why this book sounded like the exact opposite. I was eager to dive in and see if I loved it or not. Continue reading “Review: The Library of Legends by Janie Chang”

Review: Love Poems for Anxious People by John Kenney

I absolutely loved John Kenney’s book of poems, Love Poems for Married People. There was so much truth in those poems and I laughed several times.

His follow up book of poems, Love Poems for People with Children was also funny, but the Married People book is still my absolute favorite. I have gifted his books of poems multiple times and I am sure I will be gifting this one to friends in the future.

When I saw that this book was coming out, I knew it would be a great read. He writes with such raw realism and during this crazy uncertain time, what could possibly be better than a bit of satire about anxiety? Continue reading “Review: Love Poems for Anxious People by John Kenney”

Review: The Lost Boys of London (Bianca Goddard Mysteries #5) by Mary Lawrence

Bianca Goddard is a completely new to me sleuth, last year was the first time I discovered her and it was the fourth book that I picked up. I was told that each book in the series could be read as a standalone, so I was excited to dive in, even if I was skeptical.

I was thrilled that the book was indeed possible to read as a standalone and thought it was a very interesting and enjoyable series so I was excited to read the next book, even if I haven’t gone back and read the other books in the series.

This book sounded exceptionally good as it is set in the final days of Henry VIII reign and seemed to include a Catholic reference so I was excited to see how this one unfolded and as always, to read a well done mystery.
